Mr MacBride who was one of the founder members of Amnesty International, was Chairman of its International Executive for thirteen years, was Secretary-General of the International Commission of Jurists for seven years and was President of the International Commission for the Study of Communication Problems (UNESCO 1977-1981); he was Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Commissioner for Namibia (1973-1976). Mr MacBride has acted as a member of several International Commissions of Enquiry.

Mr MacBride is the holder of the Irish Military Service Medal (1920-1921); Nobel Prize for Peace (1974); the International Lenin Prize for Peace (1977); the American Medal of Justice (1978); Medal of the International Institute for Human Rights (1978); UNESCO Medal of Merit (1980); Dag Hammerskjoeld Award (1981).
